Svaneti Tower House Museum
Svaneti's medieval towers are its signature, but the machubi — the great smoke-darkened hall where a Svan family and its animals wintered together — is where highland life actually happened. This tower house in Mestia is kept by the family that has held it for centuries, and it remains a home as much as a museum. Visitors sit at the carved wooden settles, climb the defensive tower by its original ladders, and hear the household's own history: feuds, sieges, the long isolation that preserved Svan custom and song. The family often closes a visit with tea, salty Svan kubdari pastry, and, when the mood allows, singing.
