Gudauri's reputation rests on space: high, treeless, reliably snow-sure terrain on the south side of the Caucasus watershed, with freeride lines that would be roped off in the Alps lying open above the lift system. The Ridge Chalet sits at 2,200 metres in the middle of it, and is run by skiers — guiding, avalanche briefings, splitboard and touring programmes are organised in-house, and the morning weather conversation at breakfast is a professional one. Rooms are warm and unfussy, the sauna earns its keep, and dinners are long. For strong skiers, a week here delivers more untracked snow than most seasons elsewhere.
